An Operating System is the low-level software which controls a computer system. It takes care of the way the hardware operates, the communication with peripherals such as a monitor, a printer or a keyboard, the allocation of memory between various applications, and the prioritization of applications if multiple ones run at the same time. Any program which is installed on a laptop or a desktop works by sending requests to the OS for different services using an application program interface (API). The contact with the OS can be achieved via a Graphical User Interface (GUI) or a command line. In the web hosting world, the Operating System is what commands a hosting server together with any software installed on it, which includes not only website scripts, but, in addition every other application for example a VOIP or a game server. When there're virtual machines created, they employ a guest OS which is run on the server host OS.
Multiple OS in VPS
We offer you three different Linux releases for the Operating System of our virtual private servers
- Debian, CentOS and Ubuntu. These are some of the safest and the most reliable OSs on the market and we offer all three of them instead of only one as we realize that you may want to set up some software that has specific requirements with regards to the Operating System it will run on. The latter is due to the fact that each of the three Operating Systems has a large support community behind it and there are different software packages you can install on the web hosting server. Your OS selection will also determine exactly what hosting Control Panel can be set up on the VPS if you want to use one and for this reason we offer several Control Panels as well. In case you decide that you need a different OS, our tech support can quickly wipe the current one and install the one that you'd like. In addition, we offer an optional service to have the OS on your VPS updated weekly.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Hosting
If you decide to acquire one of our dedicated servers
, you'll find three Operating Systems on the registration page as we want to give you a broader choice with regard to the system environment on your server as different applications can have specific requirements. CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian feature different modules developed by their huge support communities, so you can select each of these OSs and enjoy a reliable and safe Internet hosting service. Based on your choice, you will also have different Control Panels to choose from. Needless to say, we can always change the Operating System in case the one you have selected in the beginning doesn't meet the requirements of the software that you'd like to run. We can also upgrade the OS routinely in order to keep it as secure as possible with our Managed Services upgrade package.
